Shooting Tips for Z-Flex® Sights

Safety First:

1. Always keep the muzzle of the gun pointed in a safe direction.
2. Always
keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
3. Always
keep the gun unloaded until you are ready to use it.

Acquiring the Correct ‘Sight Picture’

As one prominent gun writer put it, “Combat sights must be configured to interrupt your field of vision,” and Z-Flex® does precisely that.

Z-Flex® gives shooters the decided advantage in a fire-fight where fast, combat-style shooting is needed.  The Z-Flex® aiming aperture directly contrasts with traditional three-dot systems, which forces shooters to look down at their weapon and “connect the dots.”

When using Z-Flex® sights under distressed or combat conditions, shooters should focus on the threat at all times because, quite simply, that’s where the danger lies.

As you focus on the threat (or target), raise your weapon to firing position super-imposing Z-Flex® sights onto the target’s center mass and fire for effect!  It truly is just that fast, simple, and effective!

The unique and patented Z-Flex® design provides shooters with two different sight pictures within one sighting aperture:

  • First, there is the reflexive, combat aperture: the luminised brackets literally frame your shots on center-mass. The luminised Z-Flex® brackets allow for close-quarters combat or defensive shooting situations.
  • Second, there is the traditional notch-and-post located at the bottom of the aperture that allows for carefully aimed shots. On either side of the notch are two luminised “dots” that are on the same plane as the front post for a traditional “three-dot” sighting configuration.

Luminised Aiming Brackets versus Iron Sights

Zone Reflex Sighting System:  As its name suggests, Z-Flex® is best suited for reflexive shooting techniques.  Z-Flex® allows you to focus “on that which is trying to kill you.”  Therefore, keep your focus on the threat.

The luminized brackets help you orient the weapon on the target (or in the ‘zone’) for fast, accurate shot placement without taking your eyes off of the threat.

A significant improvement of Z-Flex® sights over traditional three-dot systems or Tritium sights is the installation of Super-Luminova® pigments that light up brightly when exposed to light sources.

Z-Flex® brackets and the “dots” on either side of the rear notch are luminised with Super-Luminova® using only the highest quality pigments to ensure the longest lasting after-glow possible.  When exposed to sunlight, a flashlight, or even UV (black) light, Super-Luminova® glows about five-times brighter than traditional Tritium sights and covers a significantly larger area making them much easier to see in low-light conditions or even in total darkness.

After a period of about 6-8 hours, the luminised Z-Flex® sights will diminish, but to a level that is brighter or equal to Tritium.  When re-exposed to bright light for approximately 30-60 seconds, the luminized Z-Flex® brackets will continue to glow for over six hours.

Shooting conditions (daylight versus low-light)

When carrying a weapon equipped with Z-Flex® sights during a night shift, shine a bright light on the Super-Luminova® pigments for about 30-60 seconds at the start of the shift.  Z-Flex® remains illuminated for the duration of a standard shift.

The same procedure can be used just before your retire for bed each night.  In the event an intruder enters your home, you can easily orient on target, even in total darkness, for a highly effective defensive shot.

Additional Tips for Experienced Shooters

Experienced shooters may encounter a brief “learning curve” as they adjust to using Z-Flex® sights.  This is attributable to engrained training that teaches shooters must align their weapon using both the front and rear sights.

This is the traditional approach to sighting your weapon and it is sound advice.  Equally sound is the practice of orienting your weapon using only the front sight.

Our only objection to either approach is that both practices require shooters to look down at their weapon to determine whether the three-dots are properly aligned.  While shooters are looking at something other than the threat, in the time it takes to ensure proper sight alignment an assailant can close the distance between the two of you thereby placing you in grave danger!  This is dramatically demonstrated by the Tueller Drill or the 21-foot rule whereby an assailant can close the distance in about 1-2 seconds or about the same time is takes to draw, aim, and fire your weapon.

Z-Flex®, on the other hand, enables shooters to quickly sight along the threat’s vital center-line – think forehead to groin – and it doesn’t get any more vital than that!!

Z-Flex® apertures are intended for combat / defensive shooting at distances out to 25 feet (typical combat distances).  However, when precise shooting is required or shooters have time to carefully aim, Z-Flex® also incorporates a notch-and-post configuration at the bottom of the aiming aperture for accurate shots at longer distances.  Thus within one aiming aperture shooters have two methods for engaging their target.

FBI statistics indicate that most gun fights involving police officers occur within 10 feet – and yet trained officers miss their intended targets!  Obviously officers are fighting for their very lives in these situations, yet the fact remains that under extreme duress it is difficult to utilize your sights.

What Z-Flex® does is “interrupt” the shooter’s field of vision.  Combined with reflexive shooting techniques, Z-Flex® helps orient the weapon on target for effective combat or defensive shooting capabilities

As you become accustomed to using Z-Flex® sights you will find your speed, accuracy, and confidence continues to improve – as will your qualification scores.  And the transition between reflexive shooting techniques and aimed fire is no problem at all since both capabilities are present within the same aiming aperture.

We would like to hear from shooters and their experience using Z-Flex® sights.  We strive to constantly improve and enhance our designs so that all shooters, and especially those who carry firearms for a living, are given “the most unfair advantage we can offer!”

Stay safe!!
